The 2022 WaveMakers were selected by Chire Regans (VantaBlack), Miami-based artist and community activist and recipient of the Oolite Arts’ Ellies Social Justice Award in 2021 Summer Jade Leavitt, director of The Queer Theory Library, Curatorial and Cultural Programs Associate at Deering Estate and 2021 WaveMaker awardee for The Queer Theory Library and Michael Linares Vazquez, Puerto Rico-based artist and Co-director of Beta Local, a San Juan nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting aesthetic thought and practice through programs and projects. Locust Projects is excited to share its 2022 WaveMaker Grant awardees! Selected through an open call process by a team of local and national artists and arts professionals, twelve visionary artists and artist collectives will receive up to $6,000 each to create innovative work that will be shared with the public across Miami in non-traditional venues and platforms. The Wavemaker Fellowship program provides a financial incentive for college graduates to stay in Rhode Island to pursue their careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) or design fields by providing student loan debt relief through a refundable tax credit, for up to four years. WaveMaker Grants are made possible by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts' Regional Regranting Program, a network of 32 partner organizations across the country. Each year, WaveMaker at Locust Projects awards a total of 60,000 in grant funding to artists across Miami-Dade County in the following three categories: New Work / Projects: Grants up to 6,000 each to support the creation and presentation of visionary, artist-driven new work / projects. Grantees receive up to $6,000 each in three categories: New Work / Projects, Long-Haul Projects, and Research & Development + Implementation. In the spirit of Locust Projects’ artist-driven mission, WaveMakers experiment and take risks, creating innovative work that is shared with the public in unconventional spaces. Since 2015, WaveMaker has awarded $570,000 to 114 of Miami’s visionary artists. Grant recipients are chosen by a panel of arts professionals and a past Idea Fund grant recipients.Locust Projects, Miami’s longest running nonprofit alternative art space, makes art happen by supporting artists with opportunities and resources-like WaveMaker incubator grants. The Idea Fund is a competitive grant process. Every grant recipient is required to hold one public event or outreach activity in the greater Houston area and to submit a final report at the end of the year. 3. The Andy Warhol Foundation for The Visual Arts Commits 1.6 Million to Emergency Relief Funds The Foundation has authorized its Regional Re-granting Program partners to re-allocate their annual 100,000 grants designated for this program to establish and administer COVID-19 emergency relief funds in their communities. The majority of funds are disbursed at the awards ceremony at the beginning of the year. Investigating downtown Miami’s less conventional spaces with context-specific interventions, installations, and performances, Fringe Projects makes extreme efforts to privilege artists ideas and engage in a commissioning process that supports experimentation, field-work and in-depth research of sites and contexts.
